Volvo high reach unveiled
Volvo will use Bauma to take the wraps off the first of its standard high reach excavators for demolition activities.
Designated the EC700BHR, the machine offers a maximum pin height of 32 m (105 ft) with a tool weighing 2.5 tons, and 29 m (95 ft) carrying a 3.5 ton tool (when a 3 m main boom section, equipped with Volvo’s unique two pin quick connect system, is removed).
This quick connect system also means that the machine can be fitted with a standard Volvo excavator boom for earthmoving applications as required, with boom changes taking one person less than 30 minutes. When in demolition mode, the machine can work in a full 360 degree envelope around the machine, making it ideal for pick and place building deconstruction, says the company.
Volvo has also designed a hydraulic extending undercarriage for further additional stability that will be available as an option. This has a unique circular profile, with the extending hydraulic cylinders encased in nickel cadmium coated steel tubes for maximum strength and cylinder protection. In addition, this shape allows the use of a full dust seal, preventing the ingress of potential damaging dust and other debris into the cylinders when the undercarriage is extended or retracted.
The boom itself is currently being supplied to Volvo by a third-party boom manufacturer, but is designed to Volvo’s specifications and makes use of many of Volvo’s standard components.
It will make its official debut at Bauma, so will be one of the demolition highlights at the show. It will be followed by an EC290C with a 17 m (56 ft) reach, an EC360C with a 21 m (69 ft) reach and an EC460C with a 27 m (88.5 ft) reach over the course of the next 18 months.
According to Eddy Powell, Volvo’s director of global demolition solutions, “These will all be based on C series machines launched this year, The EC700BHR has been launched as a B series version because the C series model, as a base machine, will not be available until 2008.
The four high reaches will join Volvo’s standard demolition excavators – 6 models from the EC210 through to the EC700 with a heavy duty specification that meet the needs of at least 75% of demolition contractors, Volvo believes. “We’re almost there with our very heavy duty off-the-shelf specification for these machines,” said Mr Powell. “We are one of only two OEMs that offer a frame mounted FOG (falling object guard). And our FOGs are certified.”
