It was the USN's first super carrier. It was the one that was stationed off the coast of Viet NAm during the war and a fighter pilot accidently shot off a rocket on deck and it was a direct hit into a 40,000 gallon tank of aviation fuel.
They are going to scuttle it off the coast in the Atlantic.
It's been nixed as a dive site. The Navy says there are still things about it that have some strategic importance. The thing was built in 1950's so I have no idea what that could be. So it looks like it is going to be a fishing reef at about 200'-250' deep.
The Forrestal was snake bit from the git go. It had numerous crashes on it's decks and several fires. I think it is presently sitting at the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
