Before starting a job, introduce to the neighbors.
I know this would be a lot different for the implosion contractors.
But, before you start a job, do you ever stop by the neighbors, introduce yourself and explain what you’re going to be doing?
Do you try to schedule work around what the neighborhood schedule seems to be? Do you and your people make the effort to make life easier for the public? Or do you just go like heck and what happens?
I do try to introduce myself to the immediately adjacent property owners if possible, I think it makes a better impression and if there is an obvious problem (ie: noise, traffic, dust) I try to make it less impactive on them if possible. The caveat is no matter what you do to try and "be nice" theres always somebody who gets bent out of shape just by the fact you're there. Not much you can do about that!
I find that if I introduce to neighbors, they sometimes think that I am trying to get on their good side in order to get away with something illegal or to do unpermited work. Some people are really suspicious.
Isn't that the truth. We have had the police called on us several times, due to nobody knew the work was going to happen and we show up and start removing things. This mainly happens on some of our eviction jobs.
I've had that happen too, James, on site visits in the shadier parts of town. I make a habit out of putting on my hardhat when I do those; it kind of takes the edge off the suspicion.
This morning at 8:00 I started up our skid steer with a hammer and started breaking up slab on grade in an extremely high end neighborhood just outside downtown Boston (happens to be the neighborhood our fine Govenor Romney lives in) thought I would be shut down in a matter of minutes but continued throughout the day without so much as a curious stare from the neighbors...guess you never know
