Thread: I have a question

    Default I have a question

Why aren't we adopting this idea from the UK?

I have just been reading on demolitionnews.com about the success of the UK's demolition-jobs.co.uk initiative that allows unemployed demolition workers to advertise their availability for work free of charge. I have made some initial inquiries and understand that the developers of demolition-jobs.co.uk would be happy to supply the code required to replicate this site in the US for just a few thousand dollars.
Given that the NDA claims there are almost 10,000 US demolition workers currently unemployed, would it not be sensible (and cost-effective) to speak to these guys about reproducing this site for US use?

Great idea! Let's get them working ASAP. It would help the country and help everyone concerned.

Was that the site that just got fined as well as Balofour Beatty because of blackballing employees?
Done right I think it is a good idea.

neyc....Rest assured this is not in any way, shape, or form the same site...It is a "real good" idea and something I feel everyone who works in this industry (US Contractors) should think about very seriously.. but it is kind of disappointing that only three of us have posted anything regarding this question...I'm not sure anymore that this industry is not truly on the "race to the bottom"?...

I am willing to help out with something like this...The only thing is that a lot of the guys we work with are not computer savy. But I agree with the UK job post. This is why the industry in Europe is a lot more advanced than the US.

Dan...Thanks for posting your thoughts and I also have been giving that very issue some mind process also...If some in our industry are not all that computer savvy...we could always establish a toll free number or some kind of online/offline help to get them into the system... but I think this would need to be a “team” effort for everyone in the industry who thinks this is a good idea and one that I would most be willing to volunteer any help and time needed on my end.....Count me in!!...

This sounds like a great idea! I know most demo workers are pretty mobile and willing to go where the work is. If you don't, you don't eat!
Let me know if there is any thing I can help with.

I have waited with great anticipation for any US industry feedback from forum members but I am extremely serious that “It is time for a change”…I appreciate the feedback from the members who did post and if I get into trouble for this so be it….I strongly feel the NDA and the industry in general need to step up to the plate other than the 4 or 5 of us that post comments regarding serious industry issues and the apparent “race to the bottom” strategy…. therefore…please find the following…..

Gentlemen, your discussions about the concept of Demolition Jobs - Home have restored my faith in human nature. I am delighted to see that I am not the only person in this industry that is willing to "pay it forward" to an industry that continues to provide my primary source of income.
As you may be aware, I am no longer permitted to post on the demolitionforum directly; and I can, therefore, only hope that the well-meaning nature of this message does not land TKC Corp in trouble.
To cut a long story short, to create a demolition-jobs.co.uk for the US would cost less than $4,000. It would be a self-sufficient, stand-alone and self-managing site that replicates the functionality of the UK site although it would, of course, replace UK job titles/descriptions with those from the US, and replace NFDC regions with US states etc. Those looking for work upload their details free of charge. Those looking for employees can view their details, again free of charge. In short, the site will cost about $4k to set up and will not generate one red cent in revenue.
However, at a time when possibly more than 7,000 of your fellow demolition workers are unemployed, is $4,000 really that big a deal?
Obviously, I personally would like nothing more than to see the NDA take this concept under their wing. They have the geographic spread and industry reputation to make this site really take off and help US demolition workers back into gainful employment for the greater good of the US economy. But the NDA's involvement is not essential.
If there is a group of altruistic demolition people out there who could gather together the $4,000 necessary, we could have this site live in a matter of a few weeks.
Once again gentlemen, I thank you for your attention and interest. I hope that you find this useful.
I would just like to conclude by saying a huge thank you to TKC Corp for risking expulsion to post this item - I sincerely hope that the owners and administrators of this site treat him fairly.

    Kind Regards
    Mark

www.DemoCareers.com is in beta testing. Many new features to be released over the next few weeks.

It is, of course, interesting to note the DemoCareers is in beta testing and I sincerely hope that this will be another step in the right direction. However, although they are currently waiving their fee, I am pretty sure that this site will ultimately make a charge.

Demolition-Jobs.co.uk works in reverse - It is not designed for employers to post details of vacant positions but for employees to advertise their availability to work. Neither the employee nor the employer EVER pay a dime.

Admittedly, the demolition-jobs.co.uk concept works best during times of recession when (a) there are plenty of unemployed workers willing to use the site and (b) plenty of employers looking to cut their recruitment costs. But if a US version of the site lasted only 12 months and only helped one of our fellow demolition workers back into gainful employment, surely that would make it a worthwhile exercise, particularly as it's not sending any money whatsoever outside the demolition industry?
