Stolen scrap metal potential law

We have a local lawmaker who wants to put a “stop” to all the metal thieves around here.

He is proposing a law that would require all parties that are selling metal to scrap yards, have their name, address, signatures, and phone number required to get the money.

What’s more he wants the scrap dealer to send them a check instead of paying cash.

What do you guys think?

I know of a few scrap processors who have gone to all check payments, some others have gone as far as not accepting "peddler scrap". Most of the larger yards in this area have already begun the drivers license/ID, address route. I am all for it. I have lost many thousands of dollars over the last twenty years to scrap theft but I am pretty certain most thieves will find ways around any laws.

I am also for it, but like you said: There are always those who will find away around any law.

It seems to me this should almost be the industry standard.

I hope they pass this law aswell. Its only going to push prices higher with a reduced or slowed intake of scrap.

Nice way to look at it and as you know wawrecker, it's only seems to be getting worse around here.

I was just out at some property this morning measuring for new fence fabric and poles where someone stole about 100 feet of my fence for scrap. I am not happy today.

Im all for it ask blast1 when we were working in Charles Town WV some one stole about 2,000$ in copper from me..we had a good idea of who it was but could not prove it because all the local scrapp yards didnt ask for any I D

Yes, it is really becoming a problem now. I think the most frustrating part about why the law was brought up, was because someone stole a bunch of copper from a Department of Transpotation project so of course it was "state" money. Should have been in place along time before this.
