Question Demo of 2 story concrete reinf. bldg

Just starting demo job with lots of abatement work. Finished abatement removals and starting demo on first building. Spec said demo to go from roof down. A hole was knocked into the wall with a large backhoe to get a bobcat in to remove some non-bearing partitions, ruble etc. on the first floor while some removals going on on the roof. Some of the engineers are claim this is against the spec to "not disturb supporting members" on lower levels.. I don't necessarily agree.

    Any opinions out there?

I am not following you, are you saying you have to leave the first floor intact? If not, as wrecknall stated why aren't you just using an excavator to take in down?

    Default My Demo Job

Well, in August we had a little rough going/beginning. My first demo job and all. Basically, we continued - convincing the site engineer and Inspector it wasn't against spec. They did have some legit safety concerns as the abatement sub was caught not wearing their gloves, masks, etc. sometimes.

I am happy to say that all abatement on the buildings are complete and all building demo is almost complete. I think the prime contractor is being very reasonable in our negotiations as we found lots of unforeseen conditions such as an asbestos panel between the concrete 2nd floor and concrete 1st floor ceiling. It had to be taken out in sections, put on the ground and the asbestos panel removed. It slid out pretty easily...but cost a little extra time and HAZ MAT hauling.

I hope to finish the job around Feb. / Mar. 2009, for about $4 Million (Engineers est was $9 Mil) Will give a more detailed Project summary at that time - if I can squeeze in the time between my projects and my toddler!!

    Go Hokies!

This is how we demo 2 story buildings:
    The roof;

    outside facade:
YouTube - Demolition of concrete building

    concrete buuilding structure:
YouTube - Demolition of concrete building in Laihia

before we start the demolition we take out everything that is resonable to sort out, sometimes by hand or most of the time with small machines.

interior removal with bobcats and robots:
YouTube - Bobcat 463 stripping floor mat
YouTube - Wall buster on Bobcat 463
    YouTube - The Roof Buster
YouTube - Amarillo Vaasa kitchen demolition
YouTube - Demolition Robot in restaurant Amarillo Vaasa
YouTube - Epoxy removal in Amarillo, Vaasa

    sorting with bobcats:
YouTube - Bobcat 463 with grapple bucket
YouTube - Bobcat 463 with bucket
YouTube - Bobcat 763 pushing a plaster pile
YouTube - Bobcat 763 with grapple bucket

the things that usually is good to take out, to make the heavy demolition more cost efficient is:
-asbestos or any other problem wastes
    -plaster and wooden walls
    -glass (windovs etc)
    -the interior
    -floor mats
    -copper piping and electrical stuff
-insulation if possible with reasonable work effort

there is no reason to take out brick or concrete walls, unless its required to make a safe demolition work. brick and concrete goes to the crusher any way, to make a good final product it's necesarry to take out most of the other building materials first.
also steel piping is stupid to cut out with small machines, they are easily sorted out with a concrete cutter, pulveriser or grapple. same goes for metall columns, because they can alos be a part of the bearing structure.
If you can build it, then I can break it!
