Well I think both have the advantages and their disadvantages.

A couple of main ones that I can think of:

Being union you a plethora of labor, disadvantage you have to go through a bunch of them to get the right person. At least hiring “off the street” you are going to know their background and if they have any experience in the industry.

Advantage for being union you will able to bid with some of the larger general contractors since most are union, disadvantage in Washington most of the demolition contractors are union, so you are going to have major competition. Also dealing with the bigger GC’s comes more paperwork and more BS

Another disadvantage: PAYROLL!! And dealing with the union can be a pain in the ass since it seems like they give all the “good” labor to the major players.

I am sure you will find many more advantages and disadvantages for going union or staying non-union.

Hopefully some others can comment

Are you thinking about going union?

We have thought it about several times before, but just can't seem to come to a unanimous decision. I have heard a lot of the same pros and cons that James has brought up. Here there are only a handful of demolition contractors that are union, but lots are non-union. So for now we are just going to stay non-union.

EASTERN MISSOURI LABOR UNIONS give all their laborers OSHA 10 hour safety training. fewer accidents, less down-time and cheaper insurance.
