Default Hello all!

I just started a debris removal service this spring.

Small town, pop 5000, about 75 miles north of Spokane Wa. Doin about a job a week, have a 1/2 ton with racks, and box van with 2000 lb liftgate.

I haul lots of lumber, yard sale stuff, dead appliences etc.

I have been turning down about a mobile home a month on avg because its beyond my abilities.

And I hate doing it because I dont get much business as a new start up, goes against everything I know tellin them no, lol.

I got a call this morn from a realtor I have worked with before asking for a bid on a double wide with a colapsed roof.

I went to look at this thing today. Oof!

When she said the roof had colapsed she wasent just a kidding, I dont think I could even get inside of it.

I did peek into a window and it looks just to be roof and carpet and LOTS of bees!

No utilitys where ever hooked up. This property is rustic to say the least 14 miles out of town in the forest in a man made hole for some reason.

No axles no tounges.

She called me this morning about 9 am and wanted a BID this afternoon.

I told her it was not possible and that I was making calls and leaving msgs but I could not and would not try and give her an estimate or bid without knowing the costs.

If she doesnt like it tough titty I guess. I may not want to continue working with somebody with these expectations.

Im a good worker (lots of references) but this time table aint going to happen.

If I was in the demo business then maybe, I would (or should) know a lot more about it.

The closest competition, if there is any, would be 100 miles away.

Theres no demo outfits here, hell, theres not even any companys MOVING mobiles around here. I guess Spokane probably has some, but nothing here anymore.

I was thinking of renting a mini ex with a thumb and seeing if I could get a 30 yard dumpster and just torch up the frame for scrap, but theres NO scrap recycle place around here, and most people cant get sunshine (waste management) to rent out their dumpsters anymore either.

I have gotten a LOT of hauling jobs cause my customer couldnt get a dumpster for some reason. I know I have tried renting them over the years and have never been able to.

They say that either they all are rented out to contractors OR "we dont service that area"???

So I guess that leaves me with hiring a dump truck and driver?

I dont have any idea what that might cost.

Most of the trailer could be sent to the landfill/transfer station in a dump truck.

It would be 50 miles round trip, from mobile to dump, back to mobile.

I dont think I would even try recycling anything mainly because theres nowhere to take it.

But with the roof in the way of everything, It would be better time spent just tearing it up and sending it off.

Burning it would be awesome! I actually mentiond that to the very first job I did, they also wanted me to demo a mobile. When I went back up there, it was a smoldering pile of aluminum, dont know what he did with if and the frame lol.

It has been in the triple digits with a red flag alert. They will hardly let you just GO into the woods, burning would land me in prison!

Which is another thing I was going to tell her, I might be able to get the mini ex up there and tear it all up and get rid of it, but torching the frames will definitely have to wait till closer to winter. Theres no water or anything up there, just woods, bears, and a nasty old double wide with no axles and no tounge.

I didnt tape it, but I would guess maybe 20' by 40'? pretty close anyway.

Easy access all the arounr it, with the ex, not a dump truck.

Well hope this paints a better picture for you.

Thanks for all your help and if ya got any other ideas for me, please let me have em!

First off welcome to the forum!

Well if you think it's beyond your abilities right now, I would keep turning them down. Plus the thing with mobile homes, most are going to contain some type of hazardous materials and that is a whole 'nother ballgame that you don't want to get involved with.

If it were me and making money doing the things your doing now, there is no reason to jump into something that is beyond you right now. Give it a little bit and write up a plan and then work towards it.

James

PS: Love the name of your company!

Thanks James, glad to be here.

I am still learning a lot just about the hauling business. But with the frequency of the mobile removal requests I think I should figure it out.

I also have had people want me to tear down and haul away their little metal sheds (that usually colapse after a few years of nobody removing the snow from them lol)

But Im not going to jump right in without doing my home work (hey, thats why I found you guys)

I figured when I started the biz that light demo MIGHT fit into one of the things I do. So its not a big suprise to me to get these requests, nowI think I want to start taking the steps to start collecting on these jobs too.

Thanks for the thumbs up on my name. I have few relitives that think Im an idiot for using it.

However, when I ask my customers what they think of it, they tell me its funny, or a gas, and easy to remember.

Even my wife wanted S-H hauling ( my sons name is Haydon) but I told her and everybody else that I cant remember names like that, and I wanted people to remember my name.
