Default SB Cox statrs Chesterfield County Jail

It's out with the old and in with the new at the Chesterfield County Jail. SB Cox of Richmond, VA started the demolition project Yesterday morning.

Sheriff Clarence Williams was at the controls as the heavy equipment brought down the first bricks and shingles.

"I'm sure some eyes are looking down on us today and thinking about what we're going and seeing the future coming to Chesterfield County," Williams said.

Building the new Chesterfield County Jail, then tearing down the old one next door has a price tag of nearly 29-million dollars. Once all of the debris is removed, the area will be used as a parking lot.

Major Donald White tells us the new facility allows recreation for inmates both indoors and out, private cells, and a medical clinic.

"We don't have to take them out of the housing area. That's one of the good things about this facility. We can actually take the service to them.

The less you move an inmate, the more secure the public is," White explained.

The new Chesterfield County Jail took three years to build and is three times as large as the old one.
