Default Dan Valley Flour Mill to be demolished

After being condemned by the city of Daville, VA, the owners of the old Dan Valley Flour Mill have plans to demolish the structure.

“It’s with no pleasure that that building will be razed,” said Rick Barker, one of the investors in the Long Mill Group that bought the property and the adjoining riverfront land between the King Bridge and Union Street Bridge.

Barker said the building would be demolished in 30 days.

Owned by the Ringgold-based MCD Investments L.L.C., the mill building was slated for a second life as a restaurant/banquet hall/office when purchased in 2002. Then came the August 2004 tornado that damaged the famous “Home of Dan River Fabrics” sign and ripped through the city, setting the state for the flour mill’s condemnation.

“The tornado blew the roof in its entirety off,” Barker said.

Winds got into the building, blew the roof up like a cap on a jar, and then slammed it back down on the brick building, he said.

Promised low-interest loans totaling $2 million and a $500,000 grant for the development from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development died. The funds were withheld because the project wasn’t moving forward.
