2 Killed in Salvage Explosion
City officials Marion, Indiana, say salvage work at the former Thomson plant – where explosions have killed two people – will not be allowed to resume until they have a detailed list of hazardous materials left in the building.
In a letter dated Oct. 7, the city’s building commissioner gives North Vernon businessman Lester Lee until Tuesday to provide a list of chemicals and other dangerous materials and a plan for salvage and demolition.
“We’re not going to get anybody else killed,” said Larry Oradat, Marion building commissioner.
“We’ve had two dead now, and we’re not doing anymore. They’re going to have to tell us what they’re doing.”
John Phillips, 41, of Seymour was using a blowtorch to detach a tank from a building Aug. 29 when it blew up and killed him instantly. Marvin Tinsley, 48, of Shelbyville died Oct. 4 after suffering severe burns when he and other workers mistakenly cut through a live electrical cable at the closed factory.
