Demolition at University of Nebraska
Demolition of the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s oldest residence hall has begun the first step in clearing the way for three new dormitory buildings.
The project started with a trackhoe tearing bricks off Case Hall, which was built in 1930. After workers bring down Case Hall, they’ll raze 44-year-old Ludden Hall.
The new dorms will be situated on the same site as Case and Ludden halls and north of Founders Hall.
It will take about two weeks to bring down Case and Ludden.
Dick Stokes, general manager for Blessing Construction, said all remnants of Case Hall would be gone by Feb. 3. As the different parts of the building are torn down, about 85 percent of the materials, including concrete, brick and metal, will be recycled.
The new residence halls will have suite-style rooms and house about 330 students. The project will cost about $22 million.
Randy Haack, UNK vice chancellor for business and finance, said the building construction contract should be awarded about April 4, and construction is expected to be complete by July 2007.
