Starland Theatre demolition firm charged
The city is laying charges against a Winnipeg construction company for violating the conditions of a permit to demolish the former Starland Theatre on Main Street.
A city spokesman confirmed that city was taking Man-Shield Construction Inc. to court.
On May 1, a section of the building collapsed during demolition, scattering debris.
“We had an inspector out the day before to tell them to block off the sidewalk and to put some protective structure along there to ensure that nothing would fall out over the sidewalk and the street. And that wasn’t done,” the spokesman said. “They failed to meet that requirement.”
Man-Shield had sub-contracted the demolition to Rogers Sewer and Water Ltd., though the city charged Man-Shield because it was the permit holder.
Imrie Acme Demolition Ltd. was later named as the new demolition sub-contractor.
