Harrison County supervisors voted this week to table the awarding of a bid to demolish the library in downtown Gulfport. The county has received 17 bids for the demolition work, ranging from $87,000 to $200,000.

Supervisors tabled the issue at the request of their architect. Architect Taylor Guild told supervisors the demolition plan must first be approved the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. He plans on meeting with that department to discuss the demolition plans.

"Let me go ahead and fill out the form, meet with Archives and History and go ahead and have their response in a timely manner before we award the bids.

The bids are good for 60 days. It won't be any consequence to the county to delay the award of this," Guild said.

A citizen's group called "We the People" continues the fight to try and save the storm damaged library building. They want the structure repaired and used as a combination library-community center.
