Bangor pushes for brewery demolition
The question of what to do with the old Sprehn Mill/Hussa Brewery property came up once again at the Bangor, WI Village Board meeting April 8, but a project manager missing in action means the board will hold a special meeting April 22.
A representative of Braun Intertec, the firm overseeing the cleanup of the site, was scheduled to speak to the council about the status of the site. However, Braun’s project manager, John Wyciskalla, notified the board a couple of hours prior to the meeting that he would not be able to attend because he had to attend to a chemical spill elsewhere.
Village President Robin Gjertsen said that it was too bad that no one was present from Braun because the board had planned, among other things, to begin discussing whether and how to establish a tax-increment financing district for the site. The Braun representative was also expected to go over with the board the first draft of the bid specifications for the demolition of the building.
Gjersten noted some new faces in attendance and learned that they had come in regard to the possible demolition of the site. Among them was Nick Adams from Portland in Monroe County. Adams said that he had been in the recycling business in Milwaukee before moving to Portland and that he was interested in tearing down the old feed mill/brewery and salvaging the bricks and steel inside.
“If you give me the job, I can get a crew here within two weeks and have the whole thing gone in 60 days,” Adams said. “I’ve got insurance, I’m bonded and I would take on the liability.”
He added that he would use local companies and labor for the job.
“If we couldn’t sell the property afterwards, we might turn it into a small shopping center,” Adams added.
Gjersten explained that, as much as the village would like to have the clean-up accomplished, Bangor does not own the property and, at this point anyway, cannot give the go-ahead to anyone. That would take the approval of the current owner, Robert Lunke, who, until now, has not indicated any desire to sell the property.
Trustee Dan Hesse said he would like to hold another meeting to increase the momentum toward getting the issue resolved. “I’d like to see the movement on this continue,” he said.
A motion was then made and approved to hold another meeting in two weeks on the demolition and establishing a TIF district for the site. That April 24 meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.
