Default Olympics demolition nearing end

The Olympic Delivery Authority has said three-quarters of the site has been demolished with 166 buildings now torn down.

In its latest monthly update, the body said that the big five sites – the main stadium, aquatics center, velodrome, broadcast center and athletes village – had been cleared of buildings.

Over 90 per cent of demolition materials are being recycled or reused and the ODA added that four complete buildings were being re-assembled off site.

It said that 50,000 cu m of earth is being dug up every week at the main stadium site in east London ahead of work on the 80,000-seat stadium's bowl.

More than half of the 246 ha site – 56 per cent – had now been cleared.

The ODA is due to award the aquatics center contract shortly. Balfour Beatty is the sole remaining bidder. And a winner on the broadcast center and velodrome will be announced in the next month.

Carillion is up against French contractor Bouygues for the broadcast center while the firm faces more overseas competition on the velodrome in the form of Spanish contractor FCC. Another British contractor ISG completes the list.

Sir Robert McAlpine is likely to start work on the main stadium in May. Bovis Lend Lease is main contractor on the athletes village, which will be the last of the major jobs to finish when it is completed by the middle of 2012.
