A landmark smokestack is imploded
The smokestack at the former AFG Glass Co. plant had been reduced to a pile of rubble.
“It's gone. There's nothing left.” Lawson Jr. said. “That was awesome.”
That was the sentiment expressed by numerous people who lined River Road yesterday to see the implosion.
“I'm surprised they're knocking it down,” township resident Elwood Young said a few minutes before the implosion. “It's an old landmark. You can see it from across the river in the Tacony (Pa.) area.”
Township Committeeman Anthony Minniti said he was pleased to see the implosion go off without a hitch.
“I thought it went great,” said Minniti, director of economic development for Cinnaminson. “It's a symbolic first step — of the revitalization of the East Riverton section of the town, the oldest, most historic section of the township.”
He said the demolition marks the beginning of what the Township Committee hopes will be the transformation of East Riverton from heavy industrial uses to light manufacturing and distribution.
“We're looking for a business park and campus much like you see on Church Street in Moorestown,” Minniti said.
AFG Glass, which purchased the property in 1981, closed the plant last year.
Minniti said a redeveloper who has a contract to purchase the property has approached the township about building an office park on the site.
Minniti declined to name the redeveloper because the sale of the property has not been completed.
