Andersen Excavating Starts smokestack demo
Andersen Excavating of Omaha began demolition of the 200-foot tall smokestack Wednesday at the BNSF Railway Co. rail yard in Havelock, NE.
From 180 feet below, a 6,000-pound wrecking ball doesn’t sound like much when it hits a tower of concrete and rebar.
The ball, suspended from a 110-ton Bucyrus-Erie crane, doesn’t sway far from the tower before swinging back for another hit.
Project manager Lanny Levell said Andersen has already brought down a 5,400-square-foot power house and will be done with the smokestack by tonight.
“We’ve probably hauled 120 loads of concrete out of here.”
The smokestack was cut to about 185 feet a few years ago, said Levell and BNSF spokesman Steve Forsberg, who added that safety is why the structures had to come down.
They were put into service around 1910. In the 1990s, the Havelock Shops were switched over to a modern, furnace-driven heating system.
