Default Residence halls to be 'deconstructed,' not imploded

The nine-story Courson and Muzzall residence halls, located on the south side of Central University in Ellensburg, WA will be “deconstructed” instead of being destroyed by implosion.

Deconstruction will involve disassembling the buildings piece by piece, a project expected to take about three months. Implosion is a method involving explosives, the board of trustees at Central Washington University was told at its monthly meeting.

“(Deconstruction is) the preferred way of taking them down,” said Richard Corona, vice president of business and financial affairs for the university. He said the low bid received was $1.534 million. “With permits and tax, it will be close to $2 million. That’s half of what we were thinking.”

A State Environmental Protection Act study will be required because the work is near a stream, he said. If it goes as planned, work will begin in March 2008, he said.

Courson and Muzzall had 480 rooms and were also used as a conference center.

These guys must be planning on recycling much of the materials. I wonder how it will work out economically after our discussions here.

I was thinking that same thing. I am trying to find out more information about the project.
