Peoria Sears Block Demolition for Caterpillar
Demolition of the old Sears Block on the Peoria riverfront begins on Monday. After a morning ceremony that will include speeches by area dignitaries such as Caterpillar Inc. Chairman Jim Owens, workers will begin dismantling the department store and parking deck, clearing the way for a $67 million regional museum and Caterpillar's visitor’s center.
The demolition is expected to take about four months, said Caterpillar project manager Mark Johnson. In July all the all hazardous materials removed. They disposed of the fluorescent lights, along with oil and paint that was still in the building. With the site in clean condition, demolition can move ahead. Handling the work for Caterpillar will be Peoria firms N.E. Finch Co. and R.A. Cullinan and Son.
About 95 percent of the concrete from the Sears demolition will be recycled.
