Massive blaze on Olympic site
Burning polystyrene set alight during demolition works was the cause of huge blaze on the site of the Olympic Park in Stratford last week, an Olympic Delivery Authority report has revealed.
The fire, which the ODA concluded was an accident, was said to have started when insulation material in a wall cavity ignited while demolition workers were cutting steel piping with an oxy-acetylene torch.
So-called ‘hot working’ during demolition of similar buildings has been temporarily suspended while the ODA carries out a review of operations.
ODA chief executive David Higgins said: "These findings confirm initial indications both that the fire was caused by accident while the warehouse was prepared for demolition and public health was not put at risk."
