Default Detroit Historical Society Preserves Parts of Tiger Stadium

Fans will have one last chance to view the historical Tiger stadium in its entirety this week.

Crews have begun taking apart pieces of the stadium and moving them to the Detroit Historical Society for preservation.

Thousands of items from the ballpark were auctioned off to help pay for demolition and redevelopment of the site located at Michigan Avenue and Trumbull Street.

Those items will be delivered or picked up by the successful bidders shortly.

The Detroit City Council approved demolition of the stadium last month.

Hall of fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell joined the nonprofit group called the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy and has submitted his plans for saving part of the stadium.

Harwell’s proposal included keeping the playing field, dugouts, locker rooms and about 3,000 seats -- with a sports museum, shops and housing elsewhere on the site.

Harwell’s plan is a version of the plan proposed and accepted last year by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The Conservancy is in the process of raising $13 million to execute its plan.
As of now, there is no word on what will replace the old ballpark after it is demolished.
