Default Preparatory works for demolition at SmartCity site begin

The preparatory works for the demolition of the existing structures at the Ricasoli industrial estate to clear the area for the construction of the SmartCity have begun.

The entire site is being fenced to ensure safety and security for the public before the demolition process -- which involves the dismantling of about 20 old industrial buildings -- is officially launched at an event to be held over the coming weeks.

Various procedures have been implemented to mitigate any environmental impact, minimize inconvenience to neighbors, respect the natural and historical context of Malta as well as minimize dust pollution.

Wastes generated from the site will be disposed according to Maltese laws and MEPA regulations, while the masonry dismantled by the demolition will be recycled to construct protection walls that will prevent waste material from being carried away.

Special procedures have also been taken to ensure the protection of Fort St. Rocco, the 19th century fortification situated in close proximity to the SmartCity Malta site.
