Default Beal Group Inc. launches Demolition company BEAL Inc.

Ann Arbor-based Beal Group Inc. launched BEAL Inc. this week, a new Detroit-based demolition company that will specialize in the interiors of historic buildings and other complicated structures. It's affiliated with Beal Group's five other companies, including JC Beal Construction Inc.

Twenty-two-year-old Stewart Beal - grandson of JC Beal Construction founder Jim Beal and one of three family members running Beal Group - was named president of the new construction firm.

"The company is going to be based in Detroit because we see that there's going to be a tremendous amount of work in the historic downtown buildings there in the coming years,'' said Stewart Beal. "We see it as a growing market.''

Between 1983 and about 2001, JC Beal Construction did more than 1,000 demolition projects like the ones BEAL will solicit. Four years ago, JC Beal Construction stopped doing that kind of work, choosing to sub-contract it out instead.

The new BEAL fills that gap, said Stewart Beal, who expects to pursue demolition projects ranging from $10,000 to $1 million in 2006, with a goal of exceeding $1 million of revenue.

BEAL is already working on at least three projects, two in Ann Arbor and one in Detroit. The Ann Arbor projects include the excavation of a downtown basement that will house a new restaurant, and the interior demolition of an office building at 1100 Eisenhower Place. All were sub-contracted to BEAL through JC Beal Construction.

"They did very well,'' said Chad Johnson, project manager for the 38,000-square-foot office building renovation, where BEAL had 18 days to gut the entire interior near the end of November. "I think they were comparable to other companies.''

Stewart Beal will continue running Beal Properties LLC and as vice president of Burns Lawn Care & Landscaping. Both are Beal Group affiliates.
