Demolition begins on old police, school building
Workers began the demolition of the former white House, TN police department building Monday morning, a job that should be completed by the end of the week.
“It should only take us about four or five days to finish the job,” said Michael Rippetoe, a machine operator on the site. “Any more than that and we lose money.”
The bid for demolition was awarded to Bomar Construction Company of Nashville, whose crew began preparing the job site early Monday.
Although the building does contain an asbestos subfloor, White House codes and planning director Addam McCormick said that it is not a high-risk operation.
The asbestos is sandwiched between the floor tiles and the wooden floor decking, and will not pose a health hazard, according to Rippetoe.
Several passersby stopped to watch the work, which progressed quickly throughout the day.
“That’s pretty cool - woooow!” cried six year-old Hunter Mathis, impressed by the big wrecking machine.
By 5 p.m. the structure was reduced to rubble, with workers removing the copper lines and wiring for recycling.
After the debris is removed, the city’s public works employees will smooth the site with top soil from the excavation at the Wal-Mart site.
“We were fortunate to be given several large piles of top soil by the crews at Wal-Mart - that saves us from having to buy dirt.” said public works director Ed Hickman.
