Default Manila-based contractor wants demolition contract

A Manila-based construction firm expressed intention to get the P900,000 demolition contract from the city government for the demolition of the old city hall building. The contract will be of a negotiated contract.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said a contractor from Manila wants to get the contract but their representative must first see whether the price also corresponds with the work that they have to do.

No local contractor put interest on the demolition job because of the very small contract price. The bidding for the demolition of the old edifice failed thrice. This prompted the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) to shift to a negotiated contract.

Treñas, however, did not name the Manila-based contractor. He said if the city government and the contractor will agree on the price, the demolition will immediately proceed. They have a time line of three months for the demolition of the old city hall.

Earlier, the BAC intended to increase the contract price for the demolition job because of the non-interest of contractors. It was not however confirmed if the contract price was indeed increased.

The old Iloilo City Hall will be demolished to give way to the construction of a nine-story city hall building.

The city government loaned P350 million from Land Bank of the Philippines for the new city hall project.

The local bids and awards committee has a target of 17 months or one year and five months of construction period for the new city hall building. They have a target date of construction October 2007 to March 2009

No local contractor was interested, so they increased the contract price?
