Default Cooling Tower Demolition Delayed

Because some guy thinks he may have seen an endangered bird? There are over a dozen of these towers that are going to be demolished this year. I hope this doesn't set a precedent.

This almost happened here in the states as well. When the Trojan Cooling Tower was brought down, Portland General Electric had a written program that had to be followed. PGE and the Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife spent thousands of dollars in order to prevent the local pair of peregrine falcons from returning to nest.

Fish and Wildlife had four spotters at the implosion, each of which had full authority to halt the countdown.

As luck would have it, the pair did not show up that day. Hopefully the UK contractor will have the same luck.

I was also at an implosion, where 5 minutes before the blast a falcon landed on the roof. The blast was delayed until two workers climbed up to the roof and chased it.

This project has been snakebit from Day 1. There were originally 7 towers plus the power staion. 5 of the towers were demolished but these 2 were deemed too close to the M1 Motorway. So everything was gone from the site and these structures have stood there for years while the wrangling went on. Then some artist came along and convinced an MP that he could turn them into artwork. Then all of a sudden the transportation people changed their minds. Now this happens.

I guess I shouldn't be too suprised. The last cooling towers Eon had imploded a rabbit chewed through the det cord and the shot was delayed for hours
