A demolition worker was injured Tuesday morning when a slab of concrete fell on him after a portion of the former Rocky Mountain News building collapsed.

The injured Colorado Cleanup Corp. employee, whose age and identity were not released, was pulled from under the slab within 10 minutes of the collapse, which was reported to the Denver Fire Department by other workers at 8:18 a.m.

The injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, said Fire Department spokesman Phil Champagne.

A Colorado Cleanup Corp. spokeswoman said the man was treated at the hospital and later released.

Champagne said the man, who was working on the first floor of the building, fell about 10 feet into the basement and the 6-foot by 4-foot slab fell onto "his lower extremities."

The building at 400 West Colfax Ave. was sold to the city of Denver by the Denver Newspaper Agency to make way for a new justice center.

Herb Gibson, acting area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said the agency is investigating.
