Plant C grant goes to Columbus
A $3 million grant application to Ohio Department of Development to clean up the former FirstEnergy Plant C building goes to Columbus Monday for review.
Ashtabula County Port Authority's consultant Stephen Collar told board members Thursday the application will be out for public review and comment starting Monday. Collar will then hand deliver the five full binders of documents to DOD officials next week.
The grant is coming from the state's Clean Ohio Remediation Fund program with at least 13 other applicants vying for the $43 million of state funds. Last week the ACPA held an information public meeting.
ACPA board president John Palo said a second required public hearing is set for 7 p.m. May 23 in the county commissioner’s chambers, old courthouse in Jefferson.
The funds will be used to remove more asbestos from inside the old electric power plant, remove any contaminated soil on the 21-acre site and replace new soil. ACPA took over negotiating the $1.1 million purchase of Plant C in March 2006.
