Demolition Takes Down More Than Building
Ford General Industries was tearing down the last of five structures on Market and Main Streets in downtown Wheeling, WV last week.
As they were pulling one wall of a building in, it collapsed the opposite way, taking down power lines as it crumbled.
An operations manager said no one was injured during the collapse.
American Electric Power turned off the power while they repaired the lines. AEP representatives said 18 customers were without electricity during the repair.
Ford General Industries said the building’s age contributed to the collapse.
“When we were pulling the building in, old mortar from just leaking over the years kind of crumbled apart,” said Steve Slebodnik, Operations Manager for Ford General Industries.
Wheeling’s Planning and Zoning Department told NEWS9 JMJ Realty owns the property and listed future development as the reason for demolition.
