Lisbon Salvage Yard shutting down…finally?
A Lisbon area landfill is in trouble with the Ohio EPA for mishandling asbestos and allowing the dumping of solid waste at the site. It is the most recent in a long line of alleged violations that could get the site shut down for good.
A & L Salvage is a 40-plus acre landfill for construction and demolition debris just south of Lisbon, but to people who live nearby it is a growing nuisance.
Lisbon Pharmacist Don Kibler lives a mile from the landfill, he and others in the area have taken up the cause of keeping A&L compliant, if not, they want the Ohio EPA to shut it down.
A recent inspection by the Ohio EPA might lead to that, these EPA photos indicate solid waste, like soda cans, and other material not considered construction debris, is being dumped there. And the EPA says A&L is mishandling asbestos.
Columbiana County Health Commissioner, Robert Moorehead says he's gotten 6-7 reports from the EPA and the landfill hasn’t stopped the dumping. They appear to be thumbing their nose at the health department and the EPA seems to be letting them, according to Moorehead.
Maybe not for long, the Ohio EPA is deciding this week if A & L's permit to operate in 2007 will be renewed or denied.
