Default Opponents to fight demolition of 107-year-old railroad building

Opponents of the planned demolition of a century-old railroad building at Packerton Yards in Carbon County, PA say they will go to court next week to seek a halt to the project.

The Save Packerton Yards group is also appealing a determination by the state Historical Museum Commission that the building lacks historical integrity and can be torn down.

Carbon County commissioners want the 42,000-square-foot building in Mahoning Township removed to prepare the 57-acre site for industrial development.

The storehouse, built around 1899 as part of the Lehigh Valley Railroad yard operations, was deemed eligible for the National Registry of Historic Places in the 1990s. Commissioners were required to provide the state with justification for demolishing the structure.

An earlier bid for a temporary injunction failed after a county judge said the plaintiffs had no standing because they were not county residents.

I hope they are successful. It sounds like a piece of history worth saving. Perhaps they could incorporate it into the new development, no?

A Carbon County judge issued a temporary restraining order Friday halting demolition of a 107-year-old building at Packerton Yards until a hearing 9 a.m. Wednesday in Carbon County Court.
