USM reprimanded for building demolition
The University of Southern Mississippi has been reprimanded by the state College Board for demolishing two buildings on the Hattiesburg campus without following proper protocol with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
Weathersby Hall, built in 1947, and the Industrial Arts/ROTC building, erected in 1915, was demolished in August, said Jim Woodrick, review and compliance officer with the MDAH.
“There’s a process to get approval and concurrence,” Southern Miss Physical Plant Director Rusty Postlewate said. “We sent in the coordinating documents to do that, but while that was in, we started to get the actual demolition lined up and we lost track of where we were in the process.
“It wasn’t timely,” he said. “It wasn’t intentional. It was just an oversight.”
