Demolition to begin soon on Royal-Memorial Stadium
Demolition of the north end zone of Royal-Memorial Stadium will begin two weeks after the Nov. 24 Longhorns football game against Texas A&M, the University of Texas men's athletics council was told Tuesday.
The lower deck of the stadium is projected to be completed before the 2007 season, with an upper deck, club seats and suites being added for 2008 while raising capacity above 90,000.
The key to paying for the $150 million expansion is the sale of suites and club seats, athletic director DeLoss Dodds told the council.
"Everything we've been able to do — better concourses, concessions, restrooms — are paid for by the people who buy suites," Dodds said.
The 47 suites in the new north end zone are expected to require a contribution of about $62,000, officials said, and they are going fast.
The athletics council approved pricing 2,000 north end zone club seats at $2,000 per seat per year. Another 2,000 outdoor chairback seats in front of the north end zone club will go for $750.
