As I thought, my very wise friend Mike (aka Truckie) has the answer to your question about escalators. Here it is. By the way, where are the escalators located? He may be able to help with the shredding.

Here is Mike's response:

I will try to answer this question the best I can.
For the most part most of the escalator can and will be shredded. The heavier frame sections can be cut and placed in p&s. Prepared structural steel. The motors will be taken out and striped. As far as the part you stand on and all the sheet metal it can and will go in the shredder.

Now as far as removal of the escalator I would either disconnect the top and drop it, or the worst case would be take it apart in to pieces you can handle.

The belt or the step section you stand on should come apart fairly easy.
