The Fulton Road bridge demolition failed this morning due to a faulty charge line, construction manager Ryan Kokosing said.

The bridge was to be imploded in a series of quick but powerful series of explosions at 8:00 on April 28th.

Approximately 1,200 explosive-filled holes have been drilled across the
1,560-foot length of the bridge, packed with a total of 700 pounds of gel and light-sensitive explosives connected by light-emitting fiberoptic wires.

The implosion did not occur after the fiberoptic wires failed to signal detonation to the explosives.

Duane Houkom Inc. of Texas is the demolition company.

This is the first time a project has failed for Houkom, said Kokosing, whose company will build the new bridge.

The new plan was to take down just the arch over railroad tracks.

The rest of job, demolition of four more arches, may have to wait until Houkom can get new detonation cable, Kokosing said.
