Default Implosion Date set for Unfinished Intel Building

The General Services Administration announced Tuesday that the structure will be imploded Feb. 25 to make way for a new United States Courthouse.

Intel began construction on the proposed 10-story building in September 2000, but the economic downturn and loss of jobs in the tech sector prompted the Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor manufacturer to stop work on the $124 million project in March 2001.

A press release from the GSA said design, planning, demolition and removal of some of the concrete frame presently on site began in late fall 2006. After the implosion of the frame, which will take place Feb. 25 at 7 a.m., clean-up is expected to be finished by Spring 2007. Cost of the demolition is estimated at $1.3 million.
